Oxford University Press

The rich history of the Oxford University Press (OPU) goes back many centuries. The press moved into large purpose built premises at the corner of Walton Street and Great Clarendon Street close to the city centre in 1830. Whilst its printing operations finally ceased there in 2021, the site remains the principal office of OUP, now operating solely as a publisher. We came across these postcards which show some of the printing activities there during the 1920s or 1930s. Oxford Academic (Oxford University Press) host a fascinating, and originally silent, film on their YouTube channel called the Making of a BookClick or tap to watch this film on the

Berkshire Aviation Tours

This business was first started in 1919 by two brothers from East Hanney, which was then in Berkshire. Although they flew all around the country, during the winter the company's machines were at first overhauled in a barn at Yew Tree Farm just outside East Hanney, and flown from the adjacent field. They relocated their maintenance operations to Witney in 1926. You can read more about them on our hidden page which looks at local landing groundsClick or tap to reveal our hidden page about local landing grounds.
